So I put up an ad on looking for roommates on this apartment website. I had to include my email address.
I was contacted today by a person named “Mina Mby.” She said something about the apartment’s website so I assumed she was responding to the ad. She said she wanted to get to know me better and included a gif of two formally dresses people kissing at the bottom of the email.
I had no clue who she was. I thought she might be foreign or something. So, I did what anyone would do when they wanted to find out who someone was; I facebooked her. The name didn’t turn up any useful results so I tried facebooking her email address. Still nothing. I then repeated the process through google. After searching the email address, I clicked on a forum that it was tagged in.
Apparently, This woman is from Russia and sends out these kinds of emails to people under different guises such as an Ivory Coast refugee. After reading other people’s stories, I found out that she basically comes up with a heart wrenching story about her life and that the only way to get out of where she is is to marry the person she is emailing. I assume her scam is to marry a person (without a pre-nuptual agreement, otherwise she’d probably flake off), then divorce them and take half of their stuff. If you read this whole thing, I commend you for caring about the stupid, but entertaining (at least to me) things that happen in my life.
Yay to being an internet savvy person and not being scammed!
